Regarding Needing a Smartphone
You don't need to get your loved one a smartphone to setup Alexa Calling. Amazon requires the Smartphone for two reasons, a unique identifier for the Amazon account and the importation of existing contacts. The unique identifier could be a normal landline phone number, except that to verify it Amazon sends a code via text messaging. The second reason could be satisfied by NOT having Alexa import contacts, but manually adding them in Alexa.
To test this:
Setup two Echo Show units. Keep one Echo Show on your home network with your Amazon account and reset the other Echo Show. This test will show how to set this up for your non-smartphone-owning loved one.
This registers the Echo Show to their account
